Thanks for pointing this out to me, Butterfly--I just got a mention about it over the BBC :)

Technically these are civil unions but they grant the same rights as marriage and appear to be different only in the change of name and lack of religious ties. Perhaps when Canada, England, and south Africa are not plagued with Nazis riding dinosaurs, our own country will follow suite.

Well, yea, they're not marriage exactly, but it's a big step in the right direction...unlike most of the US...

*nodnod* I'm still puzzled by the lack of LJ traffic on this, though. Maybe nobody believes it :)

Wow! Maybe the US will get a clue at some point. Or should we pack couples we like off for a combination wedding/honeymoon on the British isles (it probably wouldn't help much when they got back, though)?

Eh, it's a point of pride for some of the people I've met with off-shore marriage certificates. If someone tries to invalidate the relationship ("well, it's not a real committed thing, they're not *married*",) the response is "well, yes, we are."

That lack of identity problem--the whole "we can't be married, the state won't recognize us, so what are we?" kills a few relationships, from what we heard at the hearing.
