Awww...Dragon Magazine just released a bound edition of articles called "Monster Ecologies." One of the little featurettes scattered through the book shows little "history of monsters," like how the Displacer Beast evolved from the cover of a comic book story to the weird spidery panther it is now.

Another featurette--"Monsters of Suck," pictures--I think mostly from the original Fiend Folio--of the worst monsters in D&D. Including my beloved phlumph. Very cute :)

Some of the original Monster Manual monsters left something to be desired as well. I once heard a D&D player suggested gating in Bill Cosby to deal with the gelatinous cubes, black puddings and ochre jellies.

I wrote up a monster description for "Banana Puddings" once. No-one laughs but me on some of these things.
