Curses! Accidentally meme'd...

Comment and I will:
1. Tell you why I befriended you.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, etc..
3. Tell you something I like about you.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
7. In return, you must post this in your LJ.

I accidentally walked into a meme-bomb! Doh! flippantmoniker posted this one, and I responded to it without noticing that it was a meme.

If I don't know you well, I might have trouble honoring the terms of this meme, I have a hard time remembering people, but I'll do my best!

Not only do you not know me well, you barely know me at all...
Or those of us who you barely know could deliberately respond to make you think "Wait, I think I know that name. Um, no, I really don't."

Not that I would be so mean, of course.

Re: Not only do you not know me well, you barely know me at all...
I just barely know so many people on teh interwebs, too. You're cruel!

Comment and I will:
1. Tell you why I befriended you: I'm pretty sure you "friended" me early on as a FOAF (Tenar and Maus?), and seemed interesting enough and chatty enough to befriend in turn.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, etc..: Ravens? Probably because of your original handle.
3. Tell you something I like about you: You display the intelligent, witty-in-the-British-sense side of Fandom.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you: See, here's where it gets hard. I'm pretty sure you caught me totally off-guard by saying "Hi, Spotty!" at Tenar and Maus's wedding, though.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you: This one's also hard with loose acquaintances...I'll go with "how do you maintain personal joy and glamour in Dallas? It seems so heartless as a town."
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours: Boy, there's not a shortage, is there? I *like* Fantasy Football, but I'll have to go with the Moulin-type character doing the facepalm...
7. In return, you must post this in your LJ.

1. Heh, yep, I was surfing friendsfriends and you were doing the nature documentary-style observances on the Lesser American Office Drone, scaveanging for food in the break room. I chortled, clicked the button, and then asked Tenar who you were.

4. You've actually met me as well as Himself and Bear, who I talk about so often and exhaustively in my journal. The three of us were on the other side of Whines (?) at the dinner at Olive Garden.

5. Blinders. No, really. Pretty much how I deal with LJ, in fact. I paddle around in my little circle of the world, puttering in my garden, chatting with my friends out of state on my cellphone with free nights and weekends, avoid the redneck morning shows, cut through divisive comments at work, and toe a line between flying my freak flag openly and remaining employed. I've been flying under the radar so long, it surprises people when they see me on weekends. I joke about being the token liberal at the office, and get teased about being a treehugger, but I'm within acceptable parameters of wierd, most of the time.

Besides, it's all a matter of degree, innit? Compared to Austin, Dallas is uptight and conservative, but compared to Nacogdoches, TX, where the only boy with an earring did grow up to be a hairdresser but still didn't come out of the closet until after high school and our performing Anne Sexton's poetry got concerned looks from the administration, Dallas is wild and wooly. I left East Texas for a reason. I'm good here. 8-)

6. Yeah, I do have rather an indulgence of them, don't I? That was Maus's comment, actually, when I upgraded my account, that the other stuff is jsut other stuff, but 150 icons? I'm there. I don't do polls or voice posts all that often, but I do so love my happy little 100 x 100 pictures.

Please! But I realize that 4 might be really hard to come up with as we've only known each other from online.

Better late than never:
1. Tell you why I befriended you: You had a hyena for an icon, which was immediately a plus. And you spoke pretty intelligently about gaming, particularly mini's gaming, which is something my mate enjoys a lot.
2. Associate you with something - Gnolls. I can't think why.
3. Tell you something I like about you: Long, intelligent ramblings about gaming. I love those :)
4. Tell you a memory I have of you: That's a bit tricky, because, yes, we only loosely know each other. I'm afraid i don't have anything here.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you: Hmm. What first made you politically aware and active?
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours: Wolf head with the bloody muzzle, it's well-drawn.
7. In return, you must post this in your LJ.: Or not, suit yourself :) I'm not a meme fan, myself.

Re: Better late than never:
6 is actually one of mine.

5 is sort of a longer answer. I think I basically became conscious of politics more throughout the Reagan years. As a gifted student I was supposed to keep tabs on politics, right about the time that some of the worst union-bashing and Jesus-talk occured; living near Atlanta meant that a lot of what I saw came through the filter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and I quickly became very aware of the editorial bias; as a southerner living near sites with a lot of less-pleasant history I became more conscious that politics wasn't just some remote thing, that it really does affect real people.

One of the big landmarks was in 1986 with bombing Libya; because my father's friends were mostly Vietnam vets (or sat out the war in West Germany hoping not to get transfered into Vietnam), I grew up with a lot of expectations about being shipped off around 18 or so. I can remember listening to radio reports of the bombing and thinking, this is it, this is the start of what's going to draft me at 18. And of course it wasn't - it was just a big rah-rah-USA thing to bolster Reagan's popularity, and several months later we had a repeat of it, that stuff. I can only assume that it had the same effect on Qaddhafi's popularity in Libya (oooh, tough leader standing up to the evil Americans). But it was total bullshit and people died for it. That really hit at some level.

Active though... I mean, I voted, I occasionally signed petitions and so on, but I think I really only started being more active around 1996. My life was pretty crappy at that time and one of the activities I put energy into, as a way of feeling better about myself and trying to be more social, was a group protesting the "Contract For America."

Better late than never!
1. Tell you why I befriended you: Primarily, I 'friended' you after John's death, but you're pretty amusing, so no regrets. On the friending thing. I'd rather prefer the death didn't happen.
2. Associate you with something - Great Danes. This is not a reflection of you, it's just where my mind goes.
3. Tell you something I like about you: The hand gesture parts of the story.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you: The most vivid memory is still you talking about "Mr. Excessively Long", with gestures and eyebrow motion. That's the big one.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you: Are you an angry person? There's frequently a lot of sub-text in your posts and things, so I'm wondering if you view yourself as basically happy, or more pissed-off.
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours: Don't leave me many choices there, do you :)
7. In return, you must post this in your LJ.: I see this has already been done!

1. Tell you why I befriended you: I can't remember if I friended you before you moved in with us or not. If I did, it was because you were one of the entertaining furries :)
2. Associate you with something - Avencats. That's not fair, but the whole wing thing sends my mind there.
3. Tell you something I like about you: You talk a lot :) I like that, it's good company.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you: You know, I don't think I have a lot of "defining moment" memories of you! Huh. I'll have to think about that one. Seeing the teeny little living space you had at your old house surprised and impressed me--I don't think I could make my life that small!
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you: Well...not to be too morbid, but how do you see the future, and plan for it?
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours: I like "OMG so good" in particular.
7. In return, you must post this in your LJ.: I see this has already been done!

Comment and I will:
1. Tell you why I befriended you: Alone among all people, you share my love of pork and pork by-products
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, etc..: Posing as a freelance restaurant reviewer for the free desserts
3. Tell you something I like about you: You're a challenging target on the crossbow range
4. Tell you a memory I have of you: That one, perfect night we had together, throwing rocks at carnies
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you: Why did you betray my secret shame to the other tenors in 8th grade choir?

Better late than never...
1. Tell you why I befriended you: You're entertaining, and I think when I first friended you I had a crush on you.
2. Associate you with something - Kobolds.
3. Tell you something I like about you: I love how incredibly crafty you are! There's one or two other things, but they're obscene, so I'll leave them off.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you: The first memory I have of you (it's a self-centered memory) was when we were sitting down at Wing Night a few years ago, and you told me you were impressed by my finding a way to accessorize my blue leopard print shirt with my blue-black wolf medallion--"not to sound too gay or nothing..."
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you: Why the obsession with piggies in particular?
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours: "Wink" and "Glee" are my favorites :)

Re: Better late than never...
Well.. Always the superstitious guy... Being born in the year of the rabbit, I am meant to date either a sheep or a piggy. And, since last year was the year of the pig, i decided to hope and obsess about falling for one.

The other half of it is the manuscript. Piggy Moto started off as just a fun side plot for a D&D game, and became the focus of the story for NaNo 2006. I did research on porcine behavior to write the story and just fell in love with the animal.

Better late than never--
1. Tell you why I befriended you: Well, originally because you were one of the local furries, but you're thoughtful and pleasant to be around in particular, so therefore, worth 'friending.'
2. Associate you with something - Large-eyed anime characters.
3. Tell you something I like about you: You're a great 50%50% balance of gravity and seriousness and playfulness.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you: The first night I met you at Wing Night you were wearing your wolf contact lenses, and they were just human-looking enough to where I wasn't sure if they were your real eyes, and so I asked about them, and your answer was "no, they're contacts," but there was a sort of sub-sonic "don't be stupid" to it and I felt kind of dumb for asking. But to be fair, it was a dumb question. Not a particularly happy memory, but my first one.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you: What makes you totally happy? If anything? You're kind of down more than you're up, and I'd love to know where your "up" places were.
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours: It's a tossup between "Iscar" and the cute one of the little gray cartoony wolf wearing the nice black coat.
7. In return, you must post this in your LJ: So there.

Re: Better late than never--
Can't say I remember that Wing Night particularly. I just know that the first few times I was probably all stressed out and having trouble with the whole social thing. I'm sorry I made you feel stupid. Will you ever forgive me? =[

This might sound kinda crazy, but I think one of the most content times I've had were at the gym when I was going by myself. It was so peaceful. I was doing something that I wanted to do, not what others have told me what I should do. I felt like I was accomplishing something for myself. I didn't have to worry about other people. It was just me, myself and I. Plus, I LOVE the burn. It just feels so good. (Other happy times when I was dating. But I don't count those because those times were all followed by pretty big crashes. And I don't wanna rely on other people for my own well being. =])

That being said, I wish my car worked. *slurp*

Re: Better late than never--
Forgiveness is probably not an issue :) It *was* a stupid question!

Poor non-working car :( Is there a prognosis for its future yet? It's such a nice-looking car, too!
