Persimmons?

What a wonderful fruit! I'd never had a persimmon before, but they're absolutely delightful. Soft, sweet flesh, a little firmer than a banana, with ripples of...something...with a sharp crunch in it. What a nice treat! Now I need to see if I can find any persimmon-chicken recipes :)

Persimmon trees grow reasonably well here; my father has one in his front yard that bears big orange globes of fruit on alternate years.

Just *don't* bite into one that isn't ripe (generally after the first hard freeze). I did once, and it was like pouring a bottle of talcum powder in my mouth. You can also pick them when they're mostly ripe, and put them in the freezer.

Hmm, that'd be fun! I'm generally down on fruit trees, they seem like a fine way to feed the local varmints more than the local gardeners. I've been tempted by a kaffir lime tree, not for the fruit, but because the leaves are useful in Thai cooking...
