The problem with bean-counting--

Is it's really hard to get it to go anywhere interesting.

The Little Accountant

Twas not so many a year ago, in the county of Tyrone--
There lived a little ledgerman, by the name of Doug Mallone.
He assessed and he accounted, a stout young CPA,
by cyphers and deductions, he earned his daily pay.

...
I know that there's a girl in the office next to the office coffee machine that he's fallen head over heels for, but I'm going to have to meditate upon what happens next. Mind, the resolution of most of this sort of story has naught to do with either character's attributes (ahem). But it would be funnier if it did. I'll think on it.

And also in this building strong, a lovely lass did work.
So lovely was her visage fair that round her door he'd lurk.
He'd gaze secretly through the glass, drinking in her looks,
and ponder most ungentlemanly about what was in her books.

Yah, I'm just not quite sure how the overall plot's going to go. It's the spreadsheets...they're boring...

Oh, come on...
You have a word like "spreadsheet" and you can't make it interesting? It's been too long since you were in 7th grade.

Re: Oh, come on...
Interesting is easy. Long enough to sustain a ballad, tho, not so much...

Makes me think of Jonathan Coulton's song, "Code Monkey". Similar premise, but not as lyrically eloquent, which is rather cute and endearing, actually.

Yeah, that's a fun song :) It seems like there's several folk songs with "The Little..." where someone falls in love, and bad things happen afterward...sometimes unrequited, sometimes requited but dubious...

I take it you're fond of the limerick.

Not really, they're too easy and usually kind of corny. It's like the knock-knock joke of the rhymed verse world. I'm very fond of haiku, tho.

Unfortunately, the meter of this is such that I want to add, in my best southern accent and at the end of this;

Balance sheets, that is. Profit an' loss statements. Owner's equity.
