Parting is such sweet sorrow :(

I'm going to give up nutrasweet, starting yesterday.

The effect this will have on the local diet dr pepper market should be staggering.

Oh, I knew about splenda, I cook with it all the time (can't bake with nutrasweet...but CAN make diet creme brulee with splenda...) but v-e-r-y few diet sodas are available with it, which is my big problem :(

What's your reason for giving it up?

Anything Donald Rumsfeld had a hand in approving can't be good for me.

It's also been linked to brain cancer, and gives Whines a headache. There's a lot more indication that it's dangerous than any of the other sweeteners. And I drink a pretty good amount of it.

Right on. I've always been a sugar girl primarily for taste (artificial sweeteners never seem that good to me), and I've always been suspicious of how they react with the body (aspertame give me headaches too); although over-use of anything in lab rats often produces some sort of cancer. (Are we mice? Or are we men?)

I feel the answer to stuff like this will always be 'moderation'. And everything America likes is just way over-sweetened, no matter the sweetener used.

Sadly, it's really hard to ferret out any truth about any artificial sweetener. The sugar lobby's so strong that many perfectly good sweeteners (stevia and saccharine, for instance, and there's some really weird stories about miraculin, the substance in miracle berries) have been stomped into the ground, with bald-faced lies told about them.

I love saccharine, and I like nutrasweet and splenda enough. But saccharine changes the flavor of things too much, and splenda's just not available everywhere yet.

There's a lot to be said for Pepsi One (splenda-based, it's good stuff too!) What's the Organic Zero? Some sort of sugar-cane based splenda variant?

Then the question is, what quasi-junk food should I bring over on Tuesdays instead?

Hmm...Whines and I both drink Pepsi Zero (I'm drinking one now!). Coke also has a splenda-based soda, but it's reeeeely sweet. Whines also lurves Diet Rite soda, which is decaf-Splenda. And everyone loves gummi bears :)
