Ken's grandfather was a young-earth creation believer. Simultaneously, he also designed oil-drilling heads for Haliburton. He could explain (accurately) the process of oil formation. He was a brilliant man, and yet he continued to believe in a young earth that was patently impossible according to the very oil he earned his living from.

It boggles my mind.

"Latitudinarianism" is the word here. That's the mental fuzziness that lets you *know* one thing and *believe* another. It's a little disgusting that one of the national newsletters for the UUA is called the Latitudinarianist. That's kind of "hah hah...hah..."
