Harry Potter!

Found a very cool new Harry Potter book on the shelves at Waldenbooks. It's called The Plot Thickens: Harry Potter Investigated. I'm reminded of all the times the_october,athene1765 and I sat around speculating wildly--but with very convincing college degrees, close reading, and obsessive tendencies--about, say, all the possible ramifications of Granny Weatherwax's fading roll in Terry Pratchett's Diskworld books.

Anyhow, this book is a large compendium of Harry Potter essays orienting around "what if...'s" that are heavily substantiated by the text. Several speculative essays on The Marauders (Harry's dad, Lupin, Sirius, and Peter Pettigrew), mixing canon, Rowling's occasional hints and spoilers, and some "only one degree of seperation from canon" hypothesizing. Studies in alchemical symbolism, rebirth, and name symbolism (Albus, Rubeus, Sirius Black--white, red, black, and some wild theorizing of Sirius Black's role as an alchemical agent of transformation based on humors/salts. Several essays on time travel and causality. Compelling titles like "Neville's Gran and the Feathered Crowns of Egypt." The author's age listed :) and frequently surprising (there's a few compelling 13-year-olds...)
