[fades] browns and reds

Tenatively December 23. I'm not sure if there's anything sooner, it may be for just the family. I'm working on finding a site for it. We may hold some unofficial wake sooner, since people are leaving. Maybe at Bennigans, since that was such the after-game hang-out? We'll see.

Insult to injury--

My oven is broken. The gas knob won't turn and the gas just runs continually. Whines turns it off, but I have to say that, unless the universe actually wants to kill off my friends, the best way to get to me is to mess with my kitchen. How can I be a jewish grandmother with just a broken microwave? My security blanket's gone for the moment. I hope my landlord can get this fixed fast.

Stupid plan, but we go with what we have.

So, I've been spacy, out of it, wasting hewge amounts of company time on private e-mail, running home to meet the repairman (of which I am reminded of Monday's conversation of the 7 Primal Porn Plots), and in short being the sort of employee that I would hate to be, even with the mitigating factor of close personal friend dying.

So, here's my plan. I'm proud of this.

I'm declaring today a vacation day.

Check it out! Instead of "Jacob's been spacing out all day, he should go home," it's "What a hard worker, he's doing stuff here on his vacation day." And so many bonus martyr points, too! This is a great plan :)

Laughter tends to come easily under these circumstances, a mixed blessing that I am most grateful for :)

Update, and breaking the mood a bit--

It sounds like--though I'm still not certain--the family has settled on cremation, with a memorial of some sort on the 23rd. I can handle that.

Everybody says "What can I do? What can I DO?" during this sort of thing. Sometimes, you get an answer. It's not always a nice answer, but, let's look on the morbidly bright side. I've been asked to help decide what to do with the ashes.

Now, some people might be a little put off by this, but I knew John pretty well. And I think he'd see this as a challenge.

"Why are we launching him from a trebuchet at the walls of the UT Architecture department?"

"He would have wanted it. Trust me."

So many options! I'm sure I'll eventually settle on something nice and sane, but in the meantime, best suggestion gets a home-made cake and a big kiss from the Chukar inmate of their choice :) Suggestions must end in something along the general lines of "He would have wanted it that way."

Much love,
Spotty :)

As an addendum, John was the all-time bull moose winner of the "take a bad idea and run with it" award, so I'm sure that, somewhere beyond space and time but with LJ access, he'd be saying "COOL!!!" to some of these ;)
