I'm listening to a wretched CD of cat-related filks of Irish songs, and they suggest "catnip punch" as an idea. Now, there's no recipe for it, but catnip is a mint, and I know my mints pretty well.

The standard "mint punch" seems to be concentrated mint tea, milk, ginger ale, and either a lemon or an orange--though lemon curdles milk, so that doesn't seem right. Maybe lemon extract. I'll have to experiment.

It seems like you could replace the spearmint with catnip, and maybe use half-and-half to appeal to a more "catty" base by making the beverage creamier. This seems like it would be a big hit at furry parties.

One problem, though--catnip has a strong edge of skunk (well, more like lantana, it's a bitter note at the edge of the mint flavor--more in the smell than the taste). I'm not sure what to do about that. Maybe sweetening with honey would help, but that's a cloying flavor--it would go well with the milk, but I'm not sure that it wouldn't overwhelm the delicate mint taste.

Maybe a few drops of cinnamon extract? Or strengthen the mixture with catnip essential oil? Hmm...

"I'm listening to a wretched CD of cat-related filks of Irish songs"

Would that be Marc Gunn's Irish Drinking songs for Cat Lovers? I'm on 3 tracks on that, you know....

Well, I'll accept your apology when it's tendered :) Actually the execution's quite good, but the overall concept is, perhaps, a little twee. Filk is a bit like baseball game hot dogs and funnel cake, taken out of its natural habitat it loses a lot of the experience.

Were you the female vocal that occasionally turned up?

I'm playing flute and/or whistle on "I'll Tell My Cat" and "Catnipping Green", and I'm doing a solo whistle piece called "Old Grey Cat". I recorded flute/whistle on several other tracks, but I don't think he used them. I also sang a smidge here and there, clapped, and meowed. The clapping and meowing is probably still there.

He promised me a batch of CDs that I could sell as payment for my recording services, but I haven't got them yet. I haven't actually got to even listen to the CD yet, so I don't know how it turned out.

Again, it *sounds* great! The lyrics are a little saccharine, though. Would you like to borrow/steal my copy?
