Scavenging report--

Went thrift-store hopping with Whines today, doing some of the south stores that we don't get to very often--including one that I hadn't been to in probably three years down on Stassney near I-35.

Found some fun stuff, but the highlight of the trip was a set of the same dishes my family had when I was an early teenager. We'd slowly lost the set due to having two teens in the house--they were very seventies brown crockery with orangey-yellowy-brown floral patterns, not great, but I have a huge amount of nostalgia for them. Anyway, this was a big crate of those dishes--a nearly complete set! It had between six and eight large saucers, plates, coffee mug and small saucer sets (mom didn't even REMEMBER the coffee mugs). The only thing it was missing was the bowls--it had one of them, so now I have two of the extra-large four-cup or so bowls. I had a handful of plates and saucers and a bowl that I'd accumulated piecemeal over the last year, but this was a real treasure trove--for only $8!

You may want to check eBay if you want to complete your set -- my mother had a similar situation, where she found about half a set of the dishes she remembered from her childhood at a garage sale, and completed it over about six months piece by piece from eBay. Just a thought. It's cool that you found the dishes you remember growing up with!

That's a thought, I think this was one of those "piecemeal at grocery stores with your purchase" products, so it's widely available at thrift stores, one piece at a time. On the one hand, the hunt is kind of fun, on the other, I may never find the bowls that way!

How'd your party go? We were so wiped from moving my mother's house that we just fell over and didn't move for two days.

Actually, no one showed up, so we went to dinner instead. I plan to reschedule, so I'll let you know when I reschedule to.

I love it when stuff like that happens. We got a school desk (with the lift-open top) for $1 at a big church garage sale this weekend. Whee!

Re: Cool
Oh, nice! I saw a set of four of the little desks from high school--black wire-frame and formica top, with the little basket underneath--at Goodwill. It was really tempting, but we really didn't have a reason for them.

Re: Cool
Well, right now I have a little folding table in my office, supplemeting the work space of my larger computer desk. I'd rather the folding table be available for parties, however, I can store stuff in the student desk. I may paint it later, and use it as some sort of decorative furniture. For $1, it was pretty good! I wish I had brought a camera to take pictures of some of the horrors...
